How can I forecast the number of Jira/Confluence/BitBucket licenses I'll need next year?

Sometimes when managing software you will want to forecast the growth of users and sometimes wish you had been recording the total number of users for years earlier. In Atlassian products user creation date isn't shown by default, so it is impossible to know how the number of users has grown over time.

TechTime's User Management is about helping companies manage users in Atlassian products, from bulk password resets for user accounts, to adding default groups when a new user logs in. Part of User Management is graph to help visualise the impact of scheduled user cleanup called User Insights. Our user insights graph can now allow you to see how the number of active and inactive users has changed over years and perhaps decades. This helps with forecasting growth and being able to plan for reoccurring events.

Scenario

Adam the administrator has been asked to forecast licenses for the next year for Confluence

Previously

  1. Look at the current number of users on confluence, guess at how many people have joined the organisation in the last year
  2. Make a guess on how many new staff members there will be next year, and based on that how many staff members will need access to Confluence

Now

  1. Look at the historical graph and make an estimated guess based on the past 5 years, knowing it will be backed by the graph
