Application access groups are groups within Atlassian products that allow for users to log in and access the applications.

By removing users from these application groups the system becomes more secure, and licenses are freed up for new users.


Bulk user actions

Click on the Bulk User Actions link on the left pane in the JIRA or Confluence administration screens. The Bulk User Actions screen begins on the Select Users step and all users, including deactivated ones, are displayed.


Step 1 - Select Users

Filter and select the user(s) to have application access groups removed, and then click to confirm selection



You can use the filters at the top of the page to narrow down the users, with criteria such as Group(s), Username, Email Address, Full Name, User Directory, User Status, Last Login, and more.

Select the users individually, or select all users visible on the page, or click "Select all ... users"

Once you have made your choice you need to click 'Confirm selection' to move to the next screen.

Step 2 - Select Action

On the Select Action step choose one of the three options:

  1. Add or remove groups from these users (adds or removes group privileges from the specified users)

  2. Deactivate these users (deactivates the selected users)

  3. Delete these users (deletes the selected users that can be deleted, all others are deactivated)

Press Next to configure your actions.




Step 3 - Confirm Actions

On the Confirm step you will be shown:

  1. The action you have selected
  2. The number of users that the action will be performed on.

Click Confirm to perform the action




  1. The final screen will process the actions and then show a status of done after removing the application groups for the users.



Scheduled user actions

From the scheduled user actions screen in User Management


Click on the Bulk User Actions link on the left pane in the JIRA or Confluence administration screens. The Bulk User Actions screen begins on the Select Users step and all users, including deactivated ones, are displayed. Click Create new scheme.

Step 1 - Set Schedule

  1. Set the time to execute the actions
  2. Set the interval between executions

Click next to continue

Step 2 - Set User Selection

  1. Set the time to execute the actions
  2. Set the interval between executions

Click next to continue

Step 3 - Select to Remove application groups

Select to Remove application groups

Click next to continue

Step 4 - Configure audit logging

  1. Enter a scheme name to describe 
  2. Save configuration
  3. To run the task immediately, click Run Now
